Credit Worthy PDF Print

Over the last several months there has been a lot of confusion over new electronic payment requirements for businesses. The proliferation of the "smart card" in the U.S. market aims to better protect consumers from card-present fraud and create a streamlined payment system that aligns with global standards. However, there remains a lot misinformation concerning liability. Simply put, merchants not equipped with EMV card reading POS hardware will be held liable for any card-present fraud when EMV enabled cards are used. This is certainly a very simplified way of explaining a complex issue but there are many ways merchants can better understand and prepare for the October 1, 2015 deadline. Vernon Area Library will be hosting a presentation on protecting customer data that will also focus on ways you can make sure you won't be on the hook for any criminal activity. Join us Monday, July 13, with analysts from First Data to learn more about what the requirements and solutions are for your small business. Register online or call the library adult services desk at 224-543-1485.

altTwo out of every three new jobs is created by a small business, and more than half of all Americans work for a small business. So it's no surprise that Small Business Week is in its 52nd year recognizing their sacrifices, contributions and innovations. Each year the Small Business Administration chooses to honor one Small Business Person of the Year from apool of talented, driven and dedicated nominees. The winner will be announced  Friday, May 8, at a White House ceremony. Until then, there is plenty to see from the five cities hosting this year's events. Panels and seminars are covering everything from lending to supply chain to social media. Chicagoland may not be hosting events but you can live stream from the SBA website and not miss a thing. Check out the webinars being offered through the event and don't forget to get involved on social media.  #DreamSmallBiz #SBW2015
