The election for Library Trustees may not be until April, but action is required now for those who wish to run. Prospective candidates for Vernon Area Public Library Trustee in the April 2013 Consolidated Election must pick up a packet of nominating papers, available at the library beginning September 17, 2012.

The packet of includes a Statement of Candidacy, the Petition For Nomination sheets, and a Statement of Economic Interests filing receipt. Candidate packets may be picked up at the circulation desk during normal library hours: 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m.–5 p.m. on Sunday.

To qualify to run, a prospective candidate must reside within the Vernon Area Public Library District and be registered to vote. He or she must also secure the signatures of at least 50 qualified voters who reside within the Vernon Area Public Library District on a Petition For Nomination. Prospective candidates may begin circulating nominating petitions beginning September 25, 2012. Helpful information about completing and filing nominating papers may be found on the Lake County Clerk's website at http://countyclerk.lakecountyil.gov/ElectionInfo/Candidate-Services/

Completed Petition Packets may be filed at the library no earlier than 9 a.m. on Dec. 17, 2012. Candidates’ names will appear on the election ballot in the order in which their nominating papers are received at the library.

Five of the board’s seven seats will be up for election in April, including two partial terms, resulting from two trustee retirements. In total, three (3) regular six-year terms, one (1) partial term of four years, and one (1) partial term of two years will be up for election. Prospective candidates must declare which term length they are seeking on their Statement of Candidacy. All terms will commence on Monday, May 20, 2013.
